Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, the Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that aims to enhance productivity and concentration. The technique is named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used during his university years, which is known as “pomodoro” in Italian. It uses a timer to break down tasks and work into intervals. Traditionally 25minutes with a 5minutes break. After 5 sessions of 25Vs5 an individual takes a longer break of 20 minutes. It doesn’t mean you can only use 25 minutes. You can increase the timer and break according to your preferences.

The technique revolves around breaking work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, called “pomodoros.” After each pomodoro, a short break of around 5 minutes is taken. After completing four pomodoros, a longer break of 15-30 minutes is taken. This cycle is repeated throughout the workday.

How to Use the Pomodoro Technique?

Using the Pomodoro Technique is simple and can be implemented in just a few steps:

1. Plan your tasks: Before starting your work, make a to-do list of the tasks you need to accomplish. Prioritize them based on importance and urgency.

2. Set the timer: Set a timer for 25 minutes, representing one pomodoro. You can use a physical timer, a smartphone app, or a website timer.

3. Work on a task: Focus solely on the chosen task for the entire duration of the pomodoro. Avoid any distractions and interruptions during this time.

4. Take a short break: Once the timer goes off, take a 5-minute break. Use this time to stretch, grab a snack, or do something enjoyable to recharge.

5. Repeat and track progress: After the break, start another pomodoro and continue the cycle. After completing four pomodoros, take a longer break of 15-30 minutes. Keep track of completed pomodoros to monitor your progress.

It keeps track of your time and instead of getting distracted if someone approaches or calls you , you inform them you are in a session, negotiate another time to deal with them, schedule to get back to them and then do it after the session is over. Approach to postpone the interruptions and distractions until ready to deal with them not to waste time.

9. Keeps accountability. It is always good to take time and reflect on a notebook what you have accomplished which increases efficiency.
